It's a process.
Most people treat scientific literature that is published by someone that they haven't met as an oracle that is correct and definitive. This is usually substantiated by them saying "trust the science." This is a misnomer as science is an iterative process that requires literature to be continuously vetted. Which means that scientific literature is not supposed to be trusted; it is supposed to help create a foundation of understanding from which one can verify their own understanding of a subject.
It is imperative for people that aspire to improve their own life or the lives of others to adopt the scientific process as it significantly reduces points of error.
Science is comprised of the following phases: research, vet (verify/experiment/test), observe, theorize, vet (verify/experiment/test), observe, and theorize.
Verifying the theories and conclusions from research is vital for developing a strong understanding of the subject. This is where one must attempt to replicate the observations that are convayed in the cited research.
The order of the phases must be maintained as erroneously jumping between unrelated phases may result in compromised theories. Although, the scientific process may occasionally require jumping to the research phase after completing the theorization phase.
